You’ve Got to Be Kidding!

Well I’m back again and here I am, on only my second instalment and its already late to the presses! Oh well, no one seems to have noticed and that could be construed as a good thing, but then again maybe not.

April Update From Olera Farms

A lot has happened since the chicken and egg dance at which time I was so optimistic that something good was going to happen on the Marketing Board front. I have been busy with the normal spring activities and feel good about farming. The potatoes are planted, the raspberries pruned, the broccoli and some of the onions are seeded for transplanting and the green onion, dill and cilantro have germinated. This means that I am almost ready for another season of crop production.

Compost Production Under Organic Standards

Composting and organic farming have had parallel growth in British Columbia. Both are ancient arts in the production of agricultural crops that have experienced a dramatic increase in interest and employment since the mid 1980’s. Composting has received higher acceptance and use during this period because of its application beyond the rigid rules of organic production standards. The use of composts is one of the cornerstones of organic production. Composting, crop rotations, bio-diversity, and restricted use of chemical intervention are considered the major principles around which organic agriculture is based.

A Day in the Life of an Organic Farmer

In the interest of education and entertainment, I’ll be starting to write a monthly submission to this webpage. My name is Alyson Chisholm and I’m an organic farmer. Okay, so this isn’t AA but the admission has somewhat the same effect on people who aren’t organic farmers: “oh, how nice…” – a real conversation stopper and source of amazement to those who’ve just met you and thought you looked like a normal person!
