Who is O.F.F ? We are a group of organic farmers who have adapted the name Organic Friends of the Future in an effort to create a society that advocates and promotes sustainable, organic agriculture.
The farmers are Fred Reid, chicken, pigs and vegetables, Brad Reid, chicken and pigs, Alyson Chisolm, goats, chickens, veggies, Sharmin Gamiet, chickens and veggies, Susan Davidson, veggies, Aimee Watson, veggies and Rod Reid- feeds.
We have a strong dedication not only to promoting, but preserving the organic way of life. Many people are unaware that choosing to be a farmer is not a career but a lifestyle choice. In the organic movement, lifestyle encompasses not only what we put our daily sweat into, but our belief systems, our passion to preserve a healthy environment and nuture community to ensure it may continue.
Our latest efforts have largely been dedicated to the organic farmers who have come under persecusion from conventional marketing boards.
There have been losses, Fred Reid officially shut down his egg business about 6 months ago and Brad is still awaiting an appeal regarding the biological difference of an organic chicken to a conventional one.
There have also been successes. Brad did win the right to not have to pay the marketing boards for levies he did not morally or legaly incur. As well, our annual Chicken and Egg dance raised over $4000 to help pay legal bills.
Many of you may know us or have been to one of our events, I thank everyone who has supported and motivated us to continue. Now that the sun is out and things are growing, we must divert our energy to our work and farm. I would like to ask that anyone who believes they have a right to not only healthy food, but to choose an ecologically sound food system to step up and gather.
There are many ways you- the consumer- can participate in what goes on your plate. Write articles for this website, help distribute MLA packages, and definetly question your local grocer where the food is coming from. Talk to your city council, write letters to the minister of agriculture ect...You hold the money your pocket, you drive the train, take leadership and start demanding better, healthier and sustainable food. It is your fuel, take it seriously when the energy you put into your body comes from a pesticide laden farm that has travelled an average of 4000 km to get to your plate.
