Organic Farming Courses

Starting this October Camosun College is offering two courses on organic farming.

The two courses are "Organic Farming As A Business" and "Organic Gardening - Increasing Your Yield". The first one is offered this fall and starts on October 18, the second is offered in the spring and starts on April 4, 2005. Read on for more details and registration information...

Organic Farming As A Business

Are you thinking of organic farming as a profit-making business? Learn the in's and out's of finding farm land, determining acreage, planning for efficiency, maximizing tax breaks, developing your farm plan, identifying profitable crops, finding labour, selling produce, and finding support organizations. Emphasis is on planning, operating and marketing your organic farm. Includes two Saturday fieldtrips, Oct. 23 & Nov. 6, to visit local organic farms.

Organic Gardening - Increasing Your Yield

Raise beautiful organic vegetables and fruits year round! Learn techniques used in organic farming including building your soil, avoiding pests, planning your calendar year, saving your own seeds and planting difficult crops. This popular course includes three Saturday fieldtrips, April 9, 16 & 23, to local organic farms. Please bring a sample of your soil to first class for testing.

Instructors

Tina Fraser is a well-known, organic farmer who has been active in the local organic farming community for many years. Mary Alice Johnson is also an organic farmer, active in the local organic farming community, and an international public speaker on sustainable living. As successful organic farmers, Tina and Mary Alice share their many years of experience and their passion for organic farming.
