Avian flu outbreak raises concerns about factory farms

The below artical is about how conventional farms are the cause of the rapid spread of the Avian influenza. The outbreak started in a conventional farm and spread first to other conventional farms before being found on free range farms. There must be a complete seperation between the two industries so that there is little chance of one infecting the other.

Marketing board ends production of organic eggs

Last week, in a letter to friends, customers and the media, Fred Reid of Olera Farms announced the closure of his organic egg production business. After an expensive five year battle with the BC Egg Marketing Board (BCEMB) over the issue of a ‘conventional’ marketing board controlling an organic commodity, a court ruled that Olera Farms must comply with the regulations of the BCEMB. Since Reid has not held a ‘conventional’ quota to produce organic eggs in BC, he is being charged tens of thousands of dollars in fines and penalties and has been forced to close.

Exclusively organic growers freed from assessments

(Dec. 1) Soon, chemicals won't be the only thing organic fruits and vegetables are free of.

On Dec. 1, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued regulations exempting exclusively organic growers from having to pay assessments to 28 regional marketing order programs. The regulations are mandated under the 2002 farm bill.
